Screw the winter holiday season! I’m all about the fall! Between that crisp smell in the air, the excitement over which sweater will be THE project for this season and a bowl of roasted squash and garlic soup or curried tomato and carrot I get all sorts of happy.

And now I have another reason! Dia De Los Meurtos! I have no idea why but over the past few years I have become quite interested in this celebration along with Mexican food and Frida Kahlo…I think it has something to do with watching a biography on Frida followed by the film. Perhaps it was the PPD I was experiencing at the time but something about both the artist and that film (stunning imagery and the colours!!!) struck a chord and since then I have been fascinated.

Every fall since then I keep thinking “this year I’ll celebrate!” but between the (now) three birthdays and Halloween, not to mention my lousy grasp of the calendar I don’t realize how close it is till it’s the next day! This year I hope to at least make a few sugar skulls but plan to substitute white chocolate for the sugar so then they can be eaten and not give you a nasty tooth ache!

What I’m curious about is is there a good place in Toronto to go shopping for Dia De Los Meurtos stuff like the paper banners, the skeleton sculptures and most importantly the skull molds? If you have any suggestions or know of a really good online retailer please drop me a line until then I’m going to be perusing the Crafty Chica‘s website for more suggestions and ideas.

    Hi Mel!

I love Dia de los Muertos! I have a lovely papier mache skull rattle and a table centrepiece of a dancing lady skeleton (made from stiff paper and a tissue paper skirt) that friends brought me from San Fransisco. My pal Betty gave me some stamps on that theme that I love. The fall that I was expecting Davolyn, I ordered some items (molds and stuff) from http://www.mexicansugarskull.com Awesome! They delivered it to my workplace and my coworkers were amused by my excitement.

I’ve got spooky stationary for invites and have wanted to host a sugar skull decorating party for years. However, last year my Mitch’s grandpa died at Thanksgiving and a couple of weeks ago (this year), my maternal grandma died. I thought it was too early for our families to celebrate this way. I think I’ll make a couple for myself anyway.

Let me know how your quest goes!

    All the best,
    Jessica
