Spinners dream team

It’s no secret I want to retire to a self sustaining off grid small holding where I will among other things raise some sheep who’s fleece I will spin, weave and knit. I’m having one of those days where the fantasy is one sold house and a biodiesel pickup (and a drivers licence) away from reality. So to content myself I’m thinking of what kind of flock would I like? Do I go purebred? Or get all Mad Scientist and get a mixed breed?

What would make up your dream team and why?

  1. I think I’d be tempted to mix … but then again, if you have a flock of one in-demand breed, you can pretty easily sell or barter in order to get fleeces from other people’s sheep. So I’d be tempted to have a flock of just Rambouillets. Or Targhees. Or CVMs! Hmmmm ….

Then again, couldn’t you have only ewes (of a mix of breeds) and just buy ram semen of the appropriate breed as necessary? Goodness knows semen-mailing technology has become pretty mainstream (thanks, Saddlebred horses!). So in that case, a ewe each Rambouillet, Targhee, CVM, maybe Polypay. Assuming they’re compatible, I really haven’t researched it at all.
